The book examines design anthropology's growing focus on the future — what the discipline is, and what it is becoming — organised into four sections: Ethnographies of the Possible, Interventionist Speculation, Collaborative Formation of Issues, and Engaging Things. Together they develop the field's central theoretical and methodological questions around how future knowledge gets produced through design. The book treats "the real" as something bound to time — past, present, and future together — made up of contexts, people, and things caught up in design processes and in collaborative, material intervention.
The cover carries that idea directly: an aerial photograph taken through an airplane window, a landscape seen from above with a faint contrail crossing the sky, set against a gradient running from mossy yellow-green into cool sage. Read at a distance, the landscape below becomes abstract, almost illegible — a speculative space of reflection and possibility, the vantage the book's own title points toward.
The book's visual identity and design were led by the team together, working collectively across its concept, art direction, and production.
