The work presented here was undertaken during the studio founder's tenure at CAF×.
Micro-Festival was CAF×'s way of keeping something of the old festival's format alive inside its new year-round structure — a concentrated, multi-day burst of public programming, recreating in miniature the immersive density the annual festival week once had, spread periodically across the calendar as part of CAF×'s year-round programme. It was one of the products of the shift that took CAF× from Festival to Forum, replacing a single annual week with a year-round programme and a biennial — a format that ran for two editions, both during the transition itself. Where the annual festival had spanned every kind of format across the city, Micro-Festival narrowed its focus to film specifically, built entirely around screenings and the conversations that framed them.
The programme ran along two threads. The first, curated by artist duo Bêka & Lemoine under the title Spatial Disobedience: Children in Space, paired a short-film programme — cinematic documents of children's street life from the 1940s to the 1960s, from the canals of Venice to junk playgrounds in Copenhagen — with live conversations between the curators and urban planner Jan Gehl and architect Anna Heringer, on what children's own use of space reveals about the cities adults build. The second thread turned to architecture's material and geological life: screenings of Homo Sapiens and The Magic Mountain, each introduced by a researcher — geobiologist Minik Rosing, postdoctoral researcher Stine Dalager Nielsen — and a screening of Make Do With Now, introduced by Japanese-architecture specialist Alex Hummel Lee. Bêka & Lemoine's own film The Sense of Tuning, documenting architect Bijoy Jain of Studio Mumbai, screened twice, introduced by the directors both times. The programme also carried two Film Mosaic screenings, drawing on CAF×'s ongoing short-film competition on social and environmental justice — this edition developed in close collaboration with partners in Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia, showing work by LGBTQI+ filmmakers from the region alongside films on environmental justice and urban biodiversity.
CAF× produced and coordinated the full Micro-Festival — its concept, naming, and identity; the copywriting, PR, and campaign carrying it across CAF×'s channels; and its print, digital, and motion graphics design — alongside the project and event management the format's density demanded across its four days.
CAFx Micro-Festival Vol. 1 was supported by the Obel Award, Institut Français, the New Democracy Fund, the Embassy of Georgia, and Goethe-Institut Denmark.
